Table Tennis - A Legacy of Generations
June 19th, 2009 | by admin |Quite a bit like real tennis, the game of table tennis uses pretty much the same basic rules as its larger brother. If you are a sports buff and has devoted quite a number of hours in front of the boob If you watch a lot of sports on TV, then chances are you’ve watched some table tennis tournaments.
Unlike real tennis, which makes use of large rackets to knock a furry green ball back and forth, table tennis uses small paddles to knock a small plastic ball back and forth. The table is most commonly made out of wood, but sometimes you will see them made out of synthetic materials. Most people refer to table tennis commonly as ping-pong, which is termed because of the sound that it makes when it goes back and forth.
Over the years table tennis is becoming increasingly more and more popular. This is because the game is very easy to learn how to play, it is very fun, and it doesn’t take very much room to hold a table. The fact is that most garages have enough room to set up a ping-pong table, which makes a real plus for home use.
You don’t need to go out and buy a bunch of overpriced equipment in order to have a good and solid ping-pong table. The table is the only thing that requires a little bit of investment, but compared to the costs of other sports it isn’t much. After you have the table all you need is a set of paddles and some balls and you’re ready to go.
Little Bit of History behind Ping-Pong
Table tennis draws its origins from the 1800s when some really rich Victorians from England were trying to figure out a sport which they could play inside. These affluent Englanders came up with the idea from watching tennis, and started out by making some paddles on the lids of some cigarette boxes and a ball made of twine. They just used a normal table for a table and the craze began.
At the turn-of-the-century, table tennis was growing and popularity fairly rapidly, and people who are making tables started to vastly improve their design and manufacture them for sale. The tables weren’t the only things that showed improvements as they improve the paddles and balls as well. The paddles were integrated with rubber faces so it would slow the game down some and they started making the balls out of a material that gave them a rounder shape and allowed them to bounce better.
Over time with the increase of manufacturing and commerciality of the equipment, more people became introduced to it and were able to enjoy it. The year 1902 was the start of the table tennis tournament era. This year the first official tournament was played and by the year 1921 the Table Tennis Association was formed in England. It wasn’t but a short 10 years later that the first ever world championship table tennistournament was played in England as well.
Through the years, the game has acquired a life of it’s own and become a phenomenon that the entire populace enjoys. Many homes throughout the world love the availability of having a table in their own home. With this comes the enjoyment of having friends and family over to compete and play with which adds a lot of fun to the fellowship of family.
